Hi.

I have a 1964 Evinrude that needs a new impeller. I have the lower unit dropped about 3/4" and I believe it is hanging on the shift rod.
Can someone tell me how to release the shift rod?

And, ... before I forget, the shift lever is broken. It looks like it is mounted below the power head. Do I need to remove the power head to remove the shift lever?

Thanks,
J

Remove the powerhead, the linkage is underneath it. Not a difficult job.

Thank you.
My big fear is breaking bolts.

Got it!
Thank you.
Now, in taking this down, a couple parts jumped off the end of the drive shaft; spring, o-ring, cap. Can you point me to an exploded view so I can re-assemble correctly?
Thanks.

I am all set, thank you, Joe.
I found the 1964 model on another site than I am used to using.
Cheers!

When encountering a frozen bolt/screw.... use a hand held propane torch to heat and expand the aluminum surrounding the bolt/screw to help loosen it. Have a fire extinguisher and/or a garden hose handy.

Follow-up on impeller job.

When I dropped the lower unit, a bunch of items came off the drive shaft; looks like a seal backed with a coned washer, a couple of spring seals, a spring and an o-ring.
When I go to on-line parts lists, I do not see the exact same items I have.
My model is 5402 B and parts list I am referring to supports 5402. Any chance the B is a mid-year redesign cut-in that didn't make publication?
As part of this job, I need to get the power head-to-exhaust housing gasket and a couple drive shaft o-rings, so, I want to be sure I order the correct components.

Thanks again, Joe,
J

Here is a diagram of your motor. You want to order the powerhead gasket #313065 or sierra 18-2901 and you also want a new crankcase seal #303355 or sierra 18-2892. Both are very cheap and will ensure your motor lasts for another 50 years.
