I've been using the Champion 938m spark plugs (QL78YC). However, when I look at the OEM manual (not sure if its for '94 series engine or '95), it specifies the QL77QJA (also known as 838m Champion spark plugs.) Can someone chip in and let me know which one is correct one to use on this engine?

Engine is 95 115 V4, 60 degrees: J115SXE0. Thanks all.

QL78YC ...

they didnt make a 60 degree motor in 115 hp in 1994.....1995 was the first year....if you got a 94 manual, you got ther wrong manual

the plugs are way diffeent...the ql78yc's are about a 1/16th" or more longer than the ql77jc4

I dont know what the ql77qja looks like!!!

good luck

I must have the '95 manual then...it says 60 degree on front cover. (Threw me off because it says copyrighted 1994). The correct spark plug is QL77JC4 @ 0.030. I mistyped it. Again, should I use this or the QL77JC4? Thanks for the info.

boater83,
Not sure what your statement above means but the OEM web-site recommends Champion QL77JC4 with QL16V as an optional plug for the '95 J115SXEO model.

That's correct, but I was wondering if I should use QL78YC over QL77JC4 (Factory recommended). It looks like the answer may be yes. The updated BRP spark chart recommends the QL78YC.

I am at work now..and here I have a 1997 model year manual for 60 degree motors. it says QL78YC

but you are saying the 1995 manual says to use the QL77JC4????

I know one of my manuals had a normal operation plug and then an extended idle plug recomendation....

Bob, guys, yes, manual says to use QL77JC4. Use QL16V as an option for Sustained High Speed Fixed, whatever that may means.

According to the parts manual it is;

Item 13 part # 387633 — SPARK PLUG, CHAMPION, QL77JC4 (6 required per assembly)

http://www.marineengine.com/parts/j...urer=Johnson&section=Cylinder+&+Crankcase

which would be a sign you are reading the wrong page!!!! a 115 hp 60 degree looper is only a 4 cylinder!!!

thus youd only need 4 per assembly....

one reason there might be a descrepency between the manual and whats is recommended now days..is that plug performance gets better, and the minds that know have decided there is something better than what was recomended 17 years ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!

whats pathetic is you cant go to Champions website and do a look up...it ends as soon as you select marine spark plugs....it wont let you search any further....just too complicated for the parent company( Federal-Mogul)

CDI electronics is the dominate company in outboard electronics. they have done a lot of R&D and improved on OMC, Mercury electronic components, they know more about it than the manufacturer. OMC even shipped CDI replacement parts with a OMC stamp on them for a while, I think they are using someone else now to produce the electronics for the carb motors. What ever CDI tells me will supersede the manual. for instance the manual will tell you that you cannot set the timing on a 60 degree motor statically, but with a CDI powerpack you CAN..yohoo for CDI. they have better than OEM rectifier/regulators and timer bases and stators and coils and plug wires...the list is endless.

Bob,

Click on the link I posted read Item 13.

Cylinder & Crankcase Parts for 1995 Johnson 115 hp J115SXEOC Outboard Motor

They used QL77 in 95, QL82 in 96 and QL78 in 97. I copied and pasted out of the parts manual. Seaway shows the same error 6 plugs. BRP/OMC screwed up their parts manual.

I see, isnt it nice they are out of stock on the "factory" $5+ Champion QL77JC4 plug....but luckily they have in stock the repalcement Champion QL77JC4 plug for $3 and change!! ha ha ha ha

I am home and I see in my 95 manual the OP was correct...they list the QL77JC4 plug!! and it is quite different than the QL78YC

tells me the QL78YC is an improvement

QL78YC runs good, I haven't used QL77JC4 before, so can't compare. I did notice when gap to .030 with QL78YC, spark plugs expanded pretty beyond .030 in a few hours after usage, so I had to regap one or two spark plugs. Just changed another 4 new ones. Will see if this issue occurs again.

Just realize engine is VERY hard cold starting with a .030 gap spark plugs with a rebuilt engine running 25:1 ( VRO and mix fuel ). Gaping to .040 helps and engine starts instantly. Hopefully after the initial break in, .030 will starts better. Is this common? Thanks.

I am currently breaking in a 150 60 degree motor with 25:1 oil...no problem at all with .030 gap QL78YC, cranks instantly every time. maybe you have another issue.
