I have a 1998 90 hp Evinrude. I discovered a hole in the block with something square protruding from it. I have searched multiple parts diagrams and can't figure out what this is or what caused this. Any ideas or suggestions?? The motor starts and idles for a while, then dies...

I dont know what it is but if you a getting air sucked in there you will be having problems running as it will be ruining the intake vacumn. You could see if its sucking air in and put some metal high temp epoxy to plug it, thats if that protrusion isnt moving

As "nwcove" states...... that is the side view of a connecting rod, meaning the rod has broken free of the crankshaft. The crankshaft is damaged, the c/rod is shot, the block/crankcase is broken. Bad news!

X2 on the above.

It is the new style secondary thermostat....the kind without the built in overflow valve.

You say it will still run? Incredible.

Sorry about your motor... maybe you can find a good used powerhead.

Are you going to tear the motor down so you can at least know what the heck happened to cause the failure?

If you can do a compression test thatd be interesting, whatever the problem is, since you say it still idles for a while.
You will find a lot written up on this site how to do that

It's actually a port for the new supercharger that just came out. LOL.

That motor is "inside-out". ;)
Had one do that before. Took off the cowl, the connecting rod waved at me, so I put the cowl back on, cranked up the kicker and putted back in.
Self-inflicted from re-using con rod bolts. In a hurry. Expensive lesson.

I second this for sure. I love mangled parts. No two look the same. :D:D Sorry bud, your motor may be toast.

im kind of curious to see who is right!!! also i would like to see the broken parts. Usually when parts fail they do it in a spectacular fasion, I used to have a connecting rod out of a minivan that was underwater. when the flood went down the guy tried to crank it over and bent the connecting rod into a S shape .
