1967 evinrude sportfour 60 hp driveshaft sticking

I,m in the process of removing the lower unit to replace water pump. however the driveshaft seem to have gotten stuck in the flywheel or crankshaft. After I had pulled it out about one inch it would not go any further. I appreciate any advise I can get

One inch? If that driveshaft slid out one inch.... it's not sticking. Did you disconnect the shift rod linkage?
