My 1979 200 hp V6 is grinding in reverse; I have tried adjusting through the remote control cables with no success. With the motor stopped and with the selector in the reverse position, turning the prop by hand will actually turn the flywheel most of the time, but some times it will slip. On the other hand, with the engine running and with the muffs on the blade will not slip. However with the engine in the water the grinding occurs. All is OK in forward. I can buy a foot from three sellers. One is a 1982 140 hp v4; the second is a mid eighties ocean pro V6 and the third is a 1996 150 hp Vindicator. I have looked at the part numbers for each on marineengine.com but there is no match to my V6. Is it possible that even though the part numbers don't match, that the pieces will fit? All comments will be appreciated.

No, the LUs will not interchange. One big difference is the top of the driveshaft. Driveshaft length, also.

If you have your LU off, measure the shift shaft length and set it properly. That might be the source of your problem altogether.
If not, then the clutch dog sounds like it is worn.

I have a 1987 V6 25" LU for sale. Very nice fresh water unit. PM me.

It will work if you change the driveshaft as previously stated the length and spline pattern are different between a crossflow and looper, will also need to swap shift shaft due to crook in the end.

He has the one piece driveshaft, and to change it, you will have to tear the whole gearcase down, including re-shimming.
I figured he just wanted to swap lowers.

If he tears the whole GC down, he might as well just replace the dog, if that is what it is.

Not even the mid eighties Ocean Pro! It is a 140 hp unit though and not a V6 as I indicated in my earlier post.

I am merely asking if one of the three possibilities, a 1980's 140 hp Ocean Pro, has a gear case that will match up to my 1979 evinrude 200hp.

The 1996 150 will work if you change the driveshaft( as its a 2 piece) as previously stated the length and spline pattern are different between a crossflow and looper, will also need to swap shift shaft due to crook in the end.

But will the foot of a 140 hp mid eighties Ocean Pro match with my 1979 200 hp V6?
