Hey everybody! I am at the process of putting my flywheel back on my 1955 evinrude 15hp. I was wondering what i should torque the nut to that holds it on and also should i use any kind of loctite on it??

also one more question: the bolts that hold the lower unit to the leg, should i use loctite on them and what should they be torqued to? thanks

Have the flywheel and c/s tapers good and clean and torque to 40-45 ft. lbs. No loctite. You can use loctite on the l/u bolts if you want to but it's not needed. Bolt torque is 60-80 in. lbs.

As stated, DO NOT Loctite that taper, the guy that tries to pull that flywheel after you will hate you :)

Don't use loctite on the L/U bolts either - you have to remove it regularly to replace the impeller.

I agree. Never use iLoctite on the crankshaft. You could use some Loctite on the LU bolts, I suppose, but I'm with Lindy46. I'd suggest you don't since you'll want/need to drop the LU somewhat regularly to replace the impeller. Also, notice the difference between the 2 torque values given. One is in ft./lbs while the other is in inch/pounds.

thanks for everything guys. and yes i do drop the LU regularly for service so I don't think I will loctite. and kfa4303 I did notice the different torque values, that's not a problem i have a torque wrench that does both. :)

Use non hardening Permatex or Triple Guard grease on LU fasteners to insure an opportunity to remove at a later date.

I was talking about blue loctite which is easy to remove. Not red or green which requires heat to remove.

kfa4303, Did you ever try to torque 60-80 in.lbs with a ft. lb torque wrench only ?? Not very accurate. That's the reason I have three different torque wrenches in my tool box.

I use Anti-Seize on just about any bolts on these old motors, esp. those that are in the water.

Smart. I would have separate wrenches too. I guess you could convert between the two units on one tool, but you're right, it wouldn't be very accurate. I just wanted him to realize that the torque values were in two different units. Big difference (factor of twelve) between and inch pound and a foot pound.

Gotcha. It was a good point to bring up as sometimes things on here are misread.

Yea I have 2 different torque wrenches also one for ft lbs on for inch :) definitely wouldn't want to mix up ft lbs with inch lbs
