100ESL71C Johnson lower oil?

Hey all New here . So I got this motor been reading the form an seen that you can use SAE 80W-90 gear oil . No boat shops around me so I just want to make sure I can ust that oil. Reather green to boat motors tho. Great forum so far!!!!!!!!

Nope. The 1971 100hp is an electric shift gearcase. That gearcase needs Type C gear oil, not 85-90W

Ok thanx. Now were would I find Type C oil in a town with no boating supplys other than Walmart? Or is there an equivalent out there.

Walmart MIGHT have it, but probably not. It will specifically say for electric shift gearcases. If you absolutely must, use Dexron Automatic Transmission Fluid till you can get the right stuff. BTW, at Evinrude and Johnson dealers Type C is now called "Premium Blend Gearcase Lube". Not to be confused with other brands called "Premium Blend". Not the same thing.

NAPA auto parts may have some or can order it. Sierra Part # 18-9620

Checkes walmart an nothing so I will call NAPA with the part # an see what they come up with. Sux not having a boat shop close here in Alberta tho.

OK no oil close to me at all. Found a merc dealer do they have a compatible oil to use? Sales guy there didn't know for sure tho.

plain 10 weight oil will work .some standard shift ford trannies use automatic fluid and sone other standards b also .

Ok drive 4 Hours to pick up sum Type C . Drained the old oil filled the lower leg up run now she runs good. Sum oil now leakin out the prop. What is the seal in there like to change now?
