Hello, experts

I look for small outboard in Craigslist, I saw Jhonson 9.8 hp. He said motor seized. for parts.

I wonder what kind of problems when it is seized. What do I expect for repaire? or can that be posible to repair? $ 100.00
for it. Thank you for your advice...

It could be seized from not being stored away properly= probably be repairable, seized from lack of oil= junk/parts motor, seized from overheat= might be repairable, seized lower unit not letting powerhead turn= change LU probably good to go, seized from broken crank/internals=junk/parts motor. It all depends what the actual cause is.
Offer him $50-$75 for it ( if the lower unit is good) and get a good powerhead off Ebay for $75-100 if motors not repairable.

I bought two "seized" motors for parts in the last couple of yrs. Both owners said they couldn't turn the flywheel by hand or pull them through with the cord. I tried that way and had the same results. But...both engines turned over without effort when I put a wrench on the flywheel nut. I sprayed some lube in the spark plug holes first but thats all. Both motors ended up being runners instead of parts motors.

Don't even consider it. There never was a Johnson 9.8. Could be a Merc or Force or could be a Johnson 9.5 or 9.9. Seller either doesn't know what it is or is trying to deceive you.

Seized, for parts? Might sell for scrap alloy, but not worth $100.

Now, if he will give you a model number we might be able to make a responsible recommendation.

That engine is an outright gamble. If you need an engine for use now, don't buy it. If you are willing and able to do some work or can use some parts off it, then yes, take a chance---but only if the price is right--$50 maximum.

and 9.8 is a misprint--the cowl clearly shows 9.9

wondering the outcome. I have a local that wants to sell a 6 hp late 1960s johnson 6hp that claims it is seized due to storage for a few years. Did you get it working?

Consider it a parts motor and the price paid should be based on that. If you can get it going then it's a bonus. If not then you have a motor to part out.

Seems pretty clear to me that it's a late 70s or 80s 9.9, great motors. The lower alone is probably worth 100 bucks if nothing else. Powerheads can be found cheap and are not difficult to replace if you are handy. But then again, it's a lot of work when there are probably similar running outboards available for not a whole lot more.
