i have this old steering on my 1968 wellcraft 65hp Johnson outboard it still working good but should i change it? if so what kit will i need and would i need a steering wheel?
If it's the old rope and pulley system I'd just keep on using it. Just check the cable and the pulleys over for any wear and run it. Heck of a lot cheaper than a new system.
You may want to set the steering tension (pivot tension on motor) tight enough so that the motor won't whip around in case of cable failure. It'll still be plenty easy to turn the steering wheel.. Good luck, and welcome to iboats!
