Hello again,
I was wondering what are the pros and cons of the 1952 25 hp Johhnson motor? Strengths, weaknesses? Are they difficult to restore?
I don't know anything about their reputation as a motor. Are parts still available if needed?
Thanks,
Sean.

Here she is in her original glory (I love this ad!)

I love all the 50s Johnsons. Are you looking at one in particular?

You got a "barn find" up there SPK? Or; one that's been in the family all these years? And a classic lapstrake hull to match I bet? :)

Picture?

Lindsay... That's not too far away... The early 25's are noisy, fast and light weight. All consumable parts are easily available. Other hard parts you might need to find a donor engine. 98% of the time though you only need to fix the consumables to get any old OMC engine running (coils, points, carb kit, impeller, etc)

For 1953 they gained a steering bracket and mounting bosses to allow the use of remote controls. If you desire that feature you want a 1953+, but if you don't need remote controls a 1952 will be fine. I don't think there were really any major functional & mechanical differences between 1951 through 1954 other than what I mentioned. For 1955 they revised the lower unit for superior noise & vibration isolation, improved the cowl into the hinged flip up & easily removable style, plus an intake silencer was added to mute the intake drone. A 1955 lower unit looks identical to a 1965 33 horse, and with a change in the casting in 1966 that reduced the exhaust pressure relief hole size they carried through into the 1980s on the commercial 40s

1952 25s are cool brutes.

I've got one of these Johnsons. It was attached to a nice ready to restore Dunphy. Unfortunately someone hired to do some tree cutting made a very bad mistake ( I'll spare you the details) Lets just say I have a nice engine on my hands. My father has all Christ Crafts so no good there. I haven't started it yet and I'm sure it hasn't been started for a long time. Any tips to getting it running again?

Thanks, Robert
