Just got a 1 1/2 hp, model 4425, 1949-51 Evinrude. I can't find anything on it that tells what the gas/oil mix should be. Is it 16:1 or 24:1 and will the new outboard oil be OK?

Hi decorn. Welcome to iboats. I would definitely run 16:1 in that old gem. They didn't start using 24:1 until around the mid 50's and then 50:1 around the early 70s. However, most of us with vintage motors tend to err on the side of caution and run a little extra oil in the mix. Regular TCW-3 oil will work fine. No particular brand needed. You should be able to get it just about any where for about $5 a quart.

What is your serial number? Serial numbers up to 13000 are 1948 models, 13001 and up are 1949 models, and if the serial number is suffixed by a "C" she is a 1950 or 1951.

Your Sportsman uses Champion J6C plugs gapped to .030, point gap of .020, 1/3 pint of oil to a gallon of gas.

Those Sportsman Evenrudes are good little motors. I had a '37 and a '46 and both were good runners. Yes, I would run 16:1 in that as well.

Thanks for the information all. The serial # is 11461C which I guess that makes it a 50-51.
Isn't the internet great for stuff like this!
