What fuel economy should I expect from a 1979 200 hp evinrude with proper tuning? I will be running it on a 1979 Glastron 216 Sea Fury when winter is over. I just acquired the boat and engine and have been told that the motor can be quite thirsty. All I know so far is that cold cranking compression is 120 psi for all cylinders. Also can anyone give me any idea what would be the optimum RPM and or speed for best fuel economy? All responses are appreciated.

Is it a 6 cylinder or 4? I have a 4 cylinder Mercury 650 with 120# compression in all 4 cylinders. It will idle for about an hour and a half, in neutral and suck up one gallon. If I run the motor close to open throttle for 30 minutes it will burn around a gallon, and that is pushing a 16' aluminum boat with 4 people on it. A 4 or 5 hour day or cruising, skiing and basking/swimming will burn up about 5 or6 gallons. $20-$25 for a day out on the water is well worth it in my opinion!! But, I'd imagine that engine of yours at WOT will be quite thirsty, indeed.

As old rule of thumb goes, 10 % of the hp at wot. That means your mtr would burn 20 gal per hr at wot.

Best cruising speed is trial and error. The best speed will be somewhere between just on plane and about 1000 rpm higher.
Max rpm 6,000.

That is my intention in operation; I just wanted to know if anyone with the same engine and boat had any consumption figures for different RPM's. I guess the only way will be trial and error as you indicated......Thanks.............Don

Yup, Just imagine a jug in you hand pouring it over the transom. You can pour it out almost as fast as the motor can drink it.

That's why good clean filters and clean carbs are needed for good reliable operation.

If looking for 'economy' which may not be the correct description for that engine, optimize the prop for a max rpm of just above min allowed max rpm (about 5300). Then a cruising speed of around 70% of obtained max rpm might put you rather close. It depends however a lot of the boat, clean bottom, weight distribution in the boat etc.

As stated it was 20 gal per hour at WOT. Backing off on the throttle so the carb plates are almost closed and the spark is fulley advanced will give you the the best fuel economy on that mtr. After all, it'a a 1979 200 hp v-6. Not an E-TEC.

Don't feel bad. I saw this boat down in the Florida Keys last week. Imagine his fuel bill at 140 gallons per hour!!!

That boat needs an umbilical cord permanently attached to a b-train tanker tractor-trailer!

Boobie has given you some good information to get the best MPG from this engine. At about 7/8 throttle, the carbs close somewhat, yet the timing stays at full advance. That's your best fuel economy (cruising) position. You may need to pull the cowling off once to see the linkages at this point. Once you know the correct linkage position at that rpm's, you'll automatically know the rpm's to hold for all future crusing.

Yeah but it looks like he can afford it. :D

I have almost the same motor (1978 175hp), and Just re-did basically everything (carbs, filters, pumps, fuel lines, plugs, wires, etc.) Took it out yesterday, and the "best" i could get out of it at a good cruising RPM was 10gal/hr. I was shocked actually, because my main tank is shot, I was on a 6gal portable, went out messing around, and sucked that baby dry in half an hour! Good grief! I'm definitely going to need to re-evaluate my fuel budget! Good luck!

Now we are getting a closer comparison. I assume you are running that engine on your Aquasport; even though the boat is smaller than mine, the hull lines look similar. Can you tell me what engine RPM and boat speed achieved the 10 gal/hr? I guess in a couple of months when it warms up here, any surprises I have on fuel consumption will be good ones..........................Don

Those big old outboards are a thirsty bunch.

My '80 merc 200 would drain 37gal in not much over an hour pulling the kids on the tube.
Mine was worked over a bit had the exhaust opened up with the jeting to match.
I was shocked the first few times out looked all over the place for a leak.

Wow! That is over $100 an hour.

My 1987 Evinrude 225 big bore burns about 1.7 gallons per mile. But it all depends on the waves!
