how to remove flywheel/magneto cover on 1954 evinrude fleetwin 7.5

cant spin the nut off without the crankshaft moving. how do i grip the flywheel. is there a special tool?

use a strap wrench to hold the flywheel or you can use an air,electric, or cordless electric impact wrench to remove it w/o a strap wrench

Hi patridger. There are a couple tricks/tools you can try. One is to get someone to hold the flywheel while you loosen the nut. If that's not doable, you'll probably want to get a strap wrench. You can buy them very cheap at home improvement stores, Harbor Freight or autoparts stores. The strap portion is usually rubber. You can also just make one by getting a sturdy piece of wood to use as a handle and fastening a loop to one end of it made from material like a nylon strap. Make the loop slightly larger than the circumference of the flywheel such that it can slip on and off, but tighten down when you lever the handle. You can also use a large screw driver and insert in between the bolts of the flywheel puller. Scroll down about half way in the link below to see what I mean. Be sure you use GRADE 8, 1/4" x 20 bolts and washers. The bolts that come with the pullers usually are not strong enough. Here are some pics.
