Possible a core plug fell out and somebody drove a cork in it to stop the water.

There isn't supposed be any "cork" in that engine. I suspect a badly done repair/mod.

What a laugh. There is supposed to be a core (welsh, "freeze") plug in that hole. It rotted out so somebody just jammed a cork in it's place. Original part number was 27-309, replaced by 306442. Order 3 of them and replace the other two while you are at it.

carefully poke them with an ice pick and pry them out. Don't get goofy with it and go too deep.
I hear it's handy to put some sealant on the new ones. After inserting the new pulg, tap it lightly to flatten it out and seal it in there. Don't tap too hard or you'll ruin the plug. I'd buy an extra, to account for a boogered up installation on the "practice" one. :)

i got another question, theres a water flush plug on the left underside. is that where you would flush the engine with a hose. i had a look inside and it was all white with build up, would that be a problem.

No such thing as a "flush port" on a '1954'. It was called a "bucket", at that time and still is.:)

You can't use normal muffs on that motor. The flush plug is not where the water intake is, it's on the lower unit. I would ignore the flush plug. The buildup shouldn't be a problem.
Feel the cylinder head when it's running. At the hottest it gets anywhere, you should be able to hold your hand on there for about 3 seconds before it hurts. About 140 degrees is what it should run at if you have an infrared digital thermometer.
There should be a nice flow/spray of water coming from the exhaust relief when running. Make sure your water level is about 3" below the exhaust relief in your bucket or the water pump won't prime. A fan is helpful to blow the exhaust fumes away when tuning the low speed jet.
Good luck,
JBJ

OMG!! I think I just pissed myself laughing at the plug job there. I love it. :D:D I have seen one do that several years ago, and I took and threaded a short plug in there. It worked great. Never a problem again. I just bought a motor like yours last weekend. :)

Well, I think I found the previous owner at Walmart and his wife too.I even got to see his vehicle. :D:D

1946Zephyr Love the shots, I don't think my vans roof is insulated. Now as far as that block plug I have made do by cutting a plug from a cold beverage can to fit just down inside the hole about 1/4 inch, I then use my propane torch and melt lead to cover the tin/can plug and melt enuff lead in to be flush with the surface/top, Living where I do there is no OMC outboard shop, so I adapt and overdo. and sometimes DO-OVER!

There IS a water flush plug on the 1954. It can be seen in the cork pictures. And yes it is for fresh water flushing after salt water use. The flushing adapter was a pointy rubber nozzle for the hose end. Not necessary to run the motor while flushing. And yes, it is so seldom used that it usually is corroded in so badly that you can't get it out. Nice feature, if people would use it.

Yea, I got that plug out on my motors, as well. My 1941 HD-20 has one too.

Yep, read F_R's post number 16. That will describe the purpose of the flush feature.
