Hi all. Just wondering if anyone has a pic of how they have the steering and/or controls hooked up on there vintage OMC. I'm starting to get the itch to want convert from tiller to helm steering, but of course that means throttle and gear select controls too. Any rough estimates on what it would cost. My boat currently has the old pulley style set up with all the necessary hardware still intact, however I've heard mixed reviews about them. Any thoughts? I don't care about looks, or being period correct. I just want a safe, reliable boat. Thanks.

Howdy,
I rigged up a '70 model 60hp johnson the other day with cable/pulleys and it worked excellent and was original to the boat (this was a stick steering setup). I personally think stick steering is not the best setup for motors above about 40hp, but it worked. I also could take some pics of my setup on my feathercraft with cable and pulleys and a steering wheel I could take some pics of if that would help. I actually like the cable and pulley system. It's reliable and you don't have to worry about cables seizing up in cable housings.
Holler if you want pics of either.

Merry Christmas

Hi jb. Any pics you may have would be great. I have a '59, 14' aluminum, Arkansas traveler ski boat/runabout that I've converted to a tiller steer fishing boat. It originally had a pulley and cable, steering wheel set up, which I would like to set up again. I think it will help the boat get up on plane a little quicker and help distribute the weight a bit more evenly. I'm running a '66 20 hp Johnson which works great, I just need to hook up some throttle and gear control. How much would a decent control box and necessary cables be? Thanks.

Well, here goes. I don't know how helpful they will be. THere's another version of this setup where the springs are attached to the boat sides, then go through a pulley attached to the motor, then through a pulley right beside the spring, then to the front of the boat. I think that version is actually the correct way to do it. My boat is a "shortcut" method, I believe. It works good though.401715_10151079585065554_562005553_22026284_1865329902_n.jpg403019_10151079582025554_562005553_22026243_1230567226_n.jpg390713_10151079579855554_562005553_22026219_470789149_n.jpg

Merry Christmas and thanks Zephyr. I like it. I just need to fix the lower unit on it. I need a new lower unit housing for it. I tried to rig up an earlier style lower unit for it and it slips out of gear.......
