I have a new outboard motor!

It came with the throttle/shift levers and the electrical wiring for electric start.

I'm in the market for the remote steering hardward but did get the pulley mount that fits on the motor so if you guys can help me out it would be appreciated. I'd like to stay with vintage Alumacraft if I can.

Should look good on the back of my 1956 Alumacraft FD.

Wow! Looks nice! There sure seems to be a lot of vintage motors popping up on this forum...which I think is really cool! The vintage stuff is easy to work on and a lot of fun! The love the Johnson Holiday bronze red. I've got a '56 30 hp that's waiting to be repainted.

Does she run well?

Nice find!!!! I'm jealous :) While you could use the pulley steering system, a lot of folks here prefer modern rotary/telelflex style systems, but there are lots of threads here in the forums that can walk you through a variety of steering set ups. Here are some handy links to help you get and keep that old gem running. Keep us posted.

Don't put a Teleflex on that fine old rig. My opinion. Besides, it won't work right if you do.

I agree, I still use the pulley/cable on my Peterborough to run my big twins, still love it.

Beauty motor, one of my favs.

Thank you. I don't know how she runs as I've not tried to start her yet. I'll be follow your guys instructions before I try to fire her up. She does turn over easily so all is well there but I don't have a compression tester and even if I did......she what looks to be an automatic compression release system that would have to be bypassed. I bought her on faith!

Thank you sir.

Thanks for the comments and links. I've read those links before but I'll be reading them again with a new attention to the details.

I've been reading you for a while now F_R and highly value your opinion.

Thanks for the comments. The Pulley/cable system will be staying.

I'll be taking my time and hopefully doing it right getting this motor up and running. I've a lot to learn as I'm not a mechanic by trade but I am aware that she may be a real jem of a motor and deserves a 'do no harm' attitude. This will be my first outboard motor project although I do have a 1969 25hp Johnson I hope to get up and running some time in the future. It would be great if these two motors could be run using the same control system on the FD so I could swap them out but that concern is down the road a bit. I'll be keeping this thread updated as things move along. Any and all comments are welcome.

Thanks and cheers to my mentors!

That's a great old motor - I have a '57 Lark, which is the Evinrude version, but identical. I run mine most everyday during the summer and she never lets me down. That compression release system only activates with the pull-start, so just crank the starter motor to do your compression test. Mine runs 120-125psi, but anything above about 110psi should be acceptable.

Awesome find, and exactly what I am looking to find!! Will make a perfect motor for a restore. I picked up a 1958 Alumacract FDR I am looking to restore this winter. Will be a full restore, but modified to be more of a fishing vessel then a pleasure craft... this is close to what I'm thinking:

Congrats on finding that motor!

that motor is in unbelievable shape!! ( look at my avitar.....its the cowl from my cd 13......which will be brought back to "right") you can get a decal to replace the missing medallion on your cowl from nymarine.

Gotta love the Steamboat Willie avitar r.j.

Del, you can get a factory service manual at the Ken Cook Company, or Ebay. If you're very mechanically inclined, a Seloc would be good enough for you. They're at least better than Chiltons and Clymers.

I had that exact same motor! Ran it on a 1955 thunderbird for a long time... cable steering and all...

One thing in case you don't know (and I didn't see mentioned), that motor uses air pressure to pump the fuel.. it needs a dual fuel hose setup (one for fuel, one to pressurize the fuel tank). To start it up, you will need to "pump up" the air pressure in the tank manually prior to the first start, then the motor takes over from there.

Great find!@!

Re: 1957 35HP Johnson Sea Horse Model RDE 19M

yup. it uses the old two-line, pressure tank setup. However, you can convert it to a modern, fuel pump style set up with ease. there are a couple different methods, but the job itself is pretty quick and easy and costs about $30-$60, depending on where you buy your fuel pump. Most folks like mikuni brand, but they're not cheap ($60). there are other brands that work just as well for about $25. holler if you're interested and i'll post links to all. congrats again on the sweet motor. you'll be the coolest guy at the dock, for sure. cheers!

Actually the Mikunis are the cheap way to go, under 25 bucks.

Going OEM is the more expensive route, but looks cleaner and more factory

Thanks for the link, I just went there and bought one.

Here's a free online source for the manual I think I'm looking for. It seems a pain to use but it is cheap. http://boatinfo.no/lib/johnson/manuals/1922-1964johnson.html#/0

Ken Cook is asking $73.00 which seems steep though it may be the going price.

Good catch. Got my wires crossed. Yeah, I don't think the OEM/Sierra replacement part is 2 or 3 times better than the little Mikuni jobbers even though they cost 2 or 3 times more like this one.

I like using the fuel pumps from the later 33's on those old 35's, but that Mikuni is a good alternative.
