Greetings,

Looks like I need to replace a piston in my '85 johnson 15hp and was wondering if anyone can tell me if there is any flexibility to use pistons from close but different years. Looking at part numbers, only '84 and '85 match, which could be difficult in tracking down a good used one. Anyone know if an '87 could be used instead? Thanks, and sorry if this is a dumb questions,

Ryan

hi
if you get standard pistons from 9.9/15 hp johnson/evinrude made in 1974-1992, so they will fit to your motor.
its posible to get used one from ebay but put new rings on.one set is per 1 piston.
the best is to buy new pistons but they are pricely

Marineengine.com has wiseco for $59.58 apiece and OEM is $80 and that's for standard size. Rings start at $21.73 for Sierra and $25.30 for OEM. Be careful about buying used pistons on fleabay. It's best to have them in your own hands looking at them before you buy.

If you use the OEM piston, only the 1984-85 will interchange as they changed the rod and size of the wrist pin in 1986. You can use a aftermarket piston as long as you use the correct wrist pin bearings...
