I have the chance to purchase a 71 25hp elec start from an in-law for $125 ser#71R25S. I was told when it was last used ( fall of 09 ) the water pump, impeller, were replaced and the carb rebuilt. This is a NY great lakes motor in great shape...even the paint under the cowling is still perfect. I was told that it ran BUT the idle was rough. I want this motor to replace my 75 15hp. Put her in a 55gal drum and she fired right up but will not idle AT ALL and smoked like hell. Got out my manual set the roller the mixture ect..but something was strange. Went back to the manual and realized someone put on a type IV carb!!! here's where i need help This motor is a short shaft and i need a long. I can have the conversion done for $200. But now with the carb problem this is getting pricey. Can a type IV carb run on this motor or does a type II need to be installed........being this is from a family member selling it is not a option........any and all opinions welcome
thanks

I belive that the carb will work on it, but you might have to clean or rebuild it as it has set since 09. You might want to check out the fuel pump as well.

Best of Luck,

strange thing, my manual says the carb is type IV "for 50hp motors 71-75 and 78" but on e-bay the exact carb is for sale and they say it's from a 20-25hp motor1969-72.....can my shop manual be wrong?

HI mcmike. Welcome to iboats. I agree that you should rebuild the carb. You can get a carb kit and virtually any other parts you may need to get/keep your motor running right here at iboats. Here are some good links to get you started.

Aftermarket manual, right? Don't believe everyting they say.

Anyhow, I gotta ask---you were running it in a barrel. Did you have the hood on while you were doing it? If so, that is part, if not all, of the problem. It breathes its own exhaust smoke when you do that, and that smothers it to death.

yup. I don't have the problem often, but some folks even use a fan to prevent the motor from inhaling its own exhaust. It's not really an issue on the open water, but it can be while running in a barrel.

Re: 71 25hp with type IV carb ? help

Hello again mcmike. They always say "it ran great when it was put away", which may have been true. However, when motors sit for a long time, the ethanol in the gas can create gummy deposits in the small passages of the carb and on the tips of the carb needles. If you're really lucky, you may be able to clean and rebuild the carb you have already, but I would rally try to get a new carb kit. You should be able to get it right here at iboats. Thankfully, OMC used the same carb kits for many different years and models, so there's lots of overlap. To help really nail down the type of carb you have, see if you can find the part number stamped onto the carb itself. I'm not sure where it would be, but it is on there somewhere. Once we know the exact part number we can tell what year/model/type of kit you'll need. I think you need this kit, but get the part number to be sure. You may also want to check, clean and reset the points to .020". Here's a link that can walk you through the job. It's for a different model than yours, but the process is the same.

....btw because of the overlap, many of the carb kits come with parts that you may not need for your particular model, so don't worry if you see bits and pieces that don't look like they would work on your model that's perfectly normal. You'll also want to replace your float, if it is made of cork, with the plastic float in the kit. If you already have a plastic float, you can buy the same carb kit without the float and save a few $$$.
