Here is the link to the Myth of the Mixer, the true VRO story:

Wow, what controversy...I own a 87time 70hp evinrude.
I disconected my vro. Just for piece of mind...my boat only caries 18 gals so it isn't a chore to mix myself....another reason I mix is cause my wife would kill me if I came back from fishing and said I need a new motor....basically all around fear compells me to pre mix....its really a matter of choice,,

Good point Mort. I do just what you do and it gives me good "peace of mind". That way I always know what oil mix I have and if I hear a horn it must be overheat. Don't have to listen for all the different second beeps anymore.

I have an 1986 120 Johnson VRO. I am removing it for piece of mind. My boats total value is that engine so if it goes i have nothing. Also i feel that all mechanical things will need repair eventualy so why not take one more out of the mix.
