1999 johnson 175 hp shifting

i took my boat out yesterday started the motor and put in reverse and did not move put it in forward and it moved put back in neutral
and boat kept going forward had to turn off the key to stop move shifter back and forth with boat off started boat again put in reverse and it goes forward put in neutral boat stopped put in forward went forward put back in neutral still going forward thing is last time i had the boat out i had no problems what could it be

Broken shift cable, probs in control box or shift linkage on mtr broke or fell off.
