I have a 1990 Johnson AML35, the military version of the J35RESS with a problem I have never ran into and hope someone in this forum has. We put the 35 in the tank, started the motor, pulled forward on the shifter and the motor went into reverse, shifted to neutral, neutral was perfect, pushed the shifter into reverse, and it went forward. I immediately pulled the motor from the tank thinking someone had rigged it to run as a duel 35 on our Zodiac?s but the prop was the same as the rest of our props. This left me and my small engine mechanic scratching our heads. Has anyone run into this problem?
Thanks, Boz

I don't think you could assemble the shift dog the wrong way. Counter-rotating prop maybe? I don't know, I thought only the big outboards offered counter rotating gearcases/ props, but you never know.

The Prop was the first thing I checked. It is the same on all our other motors.

Problem solved. The shift lever rod was installed backwards. Even put a new foot on it before i figured it out.
