Two questions guys:
#1- No data plate on motor. Where else is the model and serial number to be found on these late 80s motors. It supposedly is a 89 but the guy that owned it is almost 90 years old and can't remember for sure.
#2- This is a VRO unit and what's the procedure for changing to a gas/oil mix instead of the automatic oil injection?

Thanks

Re: Late 80s 120 hp Johnson questions

The model number will be stamped into one (or both) of the aluminum freeze plugs in the motor block. Use the code word "introduces" to determine the year ie: I=1, N=2, T=3, R=4, O=5, D=6, U=7, C=8, E=9, S=0. If your motor is a '89, the first 2 of the last 3 letters in the model number will be "CE".
Follow the two wires coming out of the VRO pump back along the port side of the motor. You should find a rubber disconnect plug. Un-plug it, (I put a dab of grease on the connections to prevent corrosion). Locate the oil intake line (beside the fuel line) as it enters the motor. Cut the oil line about 2" away from the motor. Find a bolt that's the same diameter as the oil line and stick it into the end of the line. Attach a clamp around the line and the bolt. Remove the oil reservoir tank, fill the fuel tank with pre-mix, and go fishing.
