If you aren't sure, it's best not to guess.

To the OP, that vintage may well have been spec'd at 0.010"....that was the time of the early CDI ignitions...but wait until someone comes along who actually knows.;)

The gap is .010" You will not get any spark at .020 on that motor. It is battery cd ignition. I would clean the contacts on the distributor cap and rotor, an reset/clean both points. I just finished a '70 60hp johnson. I hate its ignition system. If the CD box is original, you can almost bet the wires coming out are corroded and the insulation is breaking off. I would also be careful to check the points gap at each lobe to be sure that the widest gap is .010. If one of the lobes makes the gap less, that would be better than wider than .010. I think .009 is o.k.
