I reinstalled the starter after changing out the carbon brushes. I thought I knew what I was doing, but when I try to start, the started clicks, but does not raise high enough to reach the flywheel (if that is what it is called).
May be wiring?

Hi Robert

Welcome to iboats. :)

Sounds like hidden corrosion in connections of the battery cables. Take off both ends of both cables, scrub them shiny and reconnect.

Let us know the result, and good luck. :)

Re: Reinstalling Starter Johnson 130 1990

It turns out when I was re-assembling the starter, I failed to insert the 4 springs in the cap, under the carbon brushes. Works perfectly now.

However, the tilt only went down and not up. I wanted to share this with others, although I read it in one of the other threads. The first thing to do is to test the relays. What I did was simply switch the 2. Instead of only going down and not up, it was reverse. Obviously I had one good relay and one bad one. Easy to replace.
