Cracks in 2003 Johnson 50 - just noticed

I bought this motor 2 years ago and it's been sitting in my shed waiting to be mounted (my resto thread post is here on p. 33: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=309879&page=33&p=3425330#post3425330 )

I finally got it mounted today and discovered these cracks. I test drove the motor before I bought it & thought it was a little sluggish @ WOT, but it was on a heavy fiberglass rental boat, so I thought that was the problem. I haven't started it since I got it and as soon as my supplies arrive to hook up the controls, I'll be able to do that.

What do you think (I mean besides that I may have bought an $1800 anchor)? Thanks.

Haven't you tried to pick at the cracks? Might just be the paint cracking.

I don't think so, but maybe...they looked deeper than that. I'm a major novice when it comes to motors. I've done a little work on them but not much. I'll check that out, thanks.

Thanks, BonairII, it looks like you're right. A Big relief. (Sorry this pic is a little soft, but it got dark out & is starting to rain). What a panic. I'm surprised how thick the paint is in that spot.

Did you see any water coming out of them when you had the mtr running?? I may be wrong but the pic looks like rust spots on the block.

I haven't had it running since I bought it two years ago. Hope to have it going soon & will check that area carefully.

The only time I have ever seen 'cracks' in that area was when a customer of mine tried to lift the engine off the boat with a chain host and forgot to remove the mounting bolts!

Thats most likely condensation rust from the flywheel, you can see rust on the flywheel teeth. The block is made out of Alu., they don't rust.

In all my years around outboards, ( last count 60 + years) and as much as I dislike this 2 cylinder engine (just my .02 worth). I have never seen one crack there, still say stress cracks in the paint and condensation rust from the flywheel. Nothing to worry about.

The 45 with the big gear casing has been my favorite for many years. Unfortunately I live in Yamaha land at the moment and has to suffer with the 40 Enduro!
In salt water and rough handling, nothing beats the old Evinrude/Johnson 45!!
But that is only my NOK .02 worth!
However when they changed the gearcase in the late 80's on the std 40-50 models, they totally ruined it!

I chipped away all the cracked paint I could in that area and the block does look fine.

1900 posts and you thought that was a cracked block?

Sorry if you find that confusing, amazing or bizarre. Most of them were about boats etc., not motors, unless I was asking questions. I've said many times I know very little of the mechanics of outboards. And I stand by that remark!

Just trying to figure out what you are inferring.

As you can see, many helpful members gave me useful advice on this. It's easy to show what you know, not so easy to show what you don't know.

I test drove it before buying, but have not started it since I've owned it. It's been stored in my shed since then.

LO I know you do mostly fresh water.......

Yup paint cracks ;) If you can get at them ......give them the same treatment as the aluminum hull if you want to re-paint
