Hello All!

I need some help! I have a 1981 Johnson 35 hp J35ECIG.
I am replacing the water pump with a water pump kit.
The kit includes 2 O rings of the same size. Where do they go?
A small fat O ring. Where does it go?
It did not come with a gasket to go between the metal plate and
WP housing as my manual shows. It does have a spaghetti like Rubber
Gasket that fits a grove in the housing. Is the spaghetti gasket a replacement for
flat gasket material?
I also lost my LiL keeper ring from my shift linkage connecting nut.
Will there be damage running without it?

Regards,
Steve R.

You need a manual, that being said, I think the two o-rings might be the ones that go on each end of the spacer on top of the water pump. The small fat one might go on the shift shaft. If you have a groove in your water pump housing for the spaghetti seal to fit in use it, otherwise you are going to have to get a gasket. Yes, you need the keeper ring (little cone shaped piece of plastic)for the shift to operate properly. Take a look at the site below, might clear up some questions.

You don't get the extension tube with a pump kit. I beleave the new style kits look different than the ones shown in the parts breakdown by the year, they changed the housing to plastic with a stainless liner using an o-ring type seal instead of a gasket.

Thanks again for the advice Daviet.
I put the pump together using an o ring seal between the metal cup and pump housing.
Though i made a gasket to fit between the pump housing and stainless plate per the Manual,
i did not use it. I instead used the rubber gasket that fit the grove made for it with ...some
Black RTV gasket stuff around the edge of the housing(i could'nt help myself.)
The small fat o ring i used between a metal bushing and the SS plate in the hole that the Shift
Linkage Rod passes thru.
Then i drove 70mi round trip to get a new plastic 4$ keeper for the shift linkage connection to replace the one I
lost. I won't lose it next time.
I will test the water circulation out this afternoon.

Steve R

I wanted to mention this for reference to anyone that it might help.
A lession I learned was to insert the copper water tube into the connection at the head end. Then slide the
lower unit on to within a couple of inches of the water tube. Then slide the water tube back into the grommet that connects
it to the water pump without it coming clear of head connection. Then slide the lower unit up and into position for bolting.
Its tight but you have just enough room to make it work ....if you dont have greasy fingers like i did.
