I have the motor above that wont start. Turn the key and nothing happens, not even a click. Therefore decided to start at the end and work my way back. Oh and I know the battery is good.

Took the starter below off. Put the positive on the red wire and the negative on the bracket that connects to the engine, well tried to and it shorted! So is this how to bench test one of these or is there another way? At the moment I'm thinking there could be an internel short.

any help appreciated

That should have worked. Sounds like it is time to have your starter rebuilt.

Turn the key and nothing happens, not even a click.
You also need to find out why the solenoid doesn't work.

Cheers fellas

Time to start searching for rebuild threads then.... I don't think a starter for a 1979 engine is going to be easy to find is it lol

marineengine.com has complete starters or parts....do you have a starter/alternator repair shop in your area?..if so, have them check it out
