I have a Evinrude 1990 48 spl. The lower unit oil has water in it. I would like to replace the prop shaft seals, but what I see does not match the book. It seems to be held in with a ring that is astern of the bearing carrier. I don't want to put the puller on it unless I know that it will come out.

Furthermore, the drive shaft seal (I'll call it a "retainer") is unbolted, but I can't get it to slide up the drive shaft.

I can see the seals, can I just take a pair of needle-nose pliers to them and yank them out?

Should I just put it back together for now and just change the oil every time I use it and wait till December when I have time?
