1982 Johnson 140 4v Stuck in reverse

I took the boat out last week and it ran very well. This past Saturday, I took it to the lake and it would only run in reverse. I checked everthing and cannot not determine what happened. Last year I had the lower unit cleaned and repaired. Any ideas? I would appreciate it.

Possible that the lower unit shift rod height was altered when you had the lower unit off for service work. That shift rod screws into the lower unit and must be preset to a very specific height prior to reinstallation to the engine. If the shift rod height is off, it will affect the way the lower unit shifts-the exact problem you are having.
