I bought a 30hp 1987 Johnson engine this spring. It has run fine the first few times I took it out. The water was colder then which I think may have something to do wit hit. I took it out for the first time in warmer water this weekend. It would run fine for the first minute or so then it would rev and run very rough. It acted like a car that has a rev limiter on it being floored in neutral. lower RPMs it runs fine but when you get over 1/3 speed it just revs and shakes. When i hook it up to the hose with clamps in the drive way (colder water) it seems to run fine.. which is why i feel water temp has an impact
I talked to a few people who all stated it could have an issue with the Stator (I know very little about boat engines) One guy said it could just be the crank seal, that replacing that could solve the problem. Another guy said it has to be the stator because the seal is either good or not. Sounds like a new stator is $350 and a seal is about $20 + Labor. Just wondering if anyone out there has any experience with this problem and might be able to lend me some advice!
Here is a video i took. When it is running rough I am trying to run over 1/3 throttle.. when it is running good.. it is running about 1/3 throttle.. go over that and it starts to rev and shake.
Thanks!
Ken
