My VRO pump finally gave up. I have been pre-mixing my fuel now for awhile. What non vro pump should I buy to replace it? Thanks

Re: 1985 Johnson 120 hp replacing the VRO pump

I was looking at the different years and fuel pump ratings. From my research, found that 1983 was the last year for non vro pumps for your style of motor. The pump number 038268 was used on motors 115hp to 140hp in 1983.
Anyone else chime in if you have a different recommendation.

Here's a thread I got involved in while changing mine. I used the pump off an 88 spl on mine, but you have to check to see if it will mount to your block first. Mine on the 1985 90hp mounted right up. The same pump is good for the 112 spl and should work for you.

The pump is an OMC PN 433387 but I used the Sierra pump PN 18-7352.

Thanks for the info guys! Has any body used the sierra 18-7352 pump on a 120hp? Just want to make sure I don't starve to engine for fuel. I see the 1982 150hp used 2 pumps. But an 1983 115hp used this one. Thanks!

The 18-7352 will feed your outboard with no issues. It is a direct replacement for the 438556 fuel pump which was used on the 140 in 1983.

Re: 1985 Johnson 120 hp replacing the VRO pump

Okay so I got my new pump (18-7382) today from iboats.com and there is only 2 ports on it. One for fuel in and one for out. Where and how do I hook up the pulse line? I am assuming the small little hole between the mounting screws. But it is a very small hole like 1/8" and my old pulse line is 5/16. Do I drill and tap this out to install a fitting? And if so I know I can't drill it out large enough to install a 5/16 fitting. So what do I do? Thanks for any info.

Ok mike, not sure about your motor, but on the port side of your motor you should find 3 bosses, 2 bolt holes, and center on with a plug in it. Remove plug and install pump.

Cofe, thanks for the quick reply. I have been looking on my motor, even took the starter off, and I do not have 3 bosses, and 2 bolt holes like you. Now what?

That small hole could be there because there's no pulse limiting gizmo like you would have had on the 3 port one.
I wouldn't drill it out, needless to say there should be a gasket there too I guess.

You posted while I was typing Mike, forget everything I said.
I think you should swap it for a 3 port one.

I have an '85 Evinrude 140 which I believe is pretty much identical. 1985 was the first year for the "looper" so I don't know if you should be looking at '85 and up or not. Mine is premix but it came that way, so I don't know what's on it.

Re: 1985 Johnson 120 hp replacing the VRO pump

Thanks guys, I have a fishing trip planned for this weekend and don't have time to wait for another pump. So it looks like I will try to drill and tap that hole and install a threaded to barb 1/4" fitting and replace the one 5/16" fitting on the motor down to a 1/4". It looks like there is enough room to drill and tap the new pump to 1/8" npt.

Re: 1985 Johnson 120 hp replacing the VRO pump

I have the exact same outboard and I just replaced the failed VRO pump with a pulse type pump. Tested it out today and it worked great. You need part number 438559, or just tell your parts guy you have a 1975 135 hp. It has 3 hose connections instead of 2 - fuel in, fuel out and pulse. Cost me $120 here in the land of overpriced marine parts (Canada), but much better than the $500 they wanted for a VRO pump. Unfortunately there's no aftermarket equivalent that I know of. The loopcharged block was designed post-VRO so there is no place to bolt an old style fuel pump to and you will need to fabricate some type of bracket for it. Mine is just a bent piece of metal with 3 holes drilled in it (2 to bolt the pump to and one on the other side of the bend to bold to the block). Made it from a leftover chain link fence bracket.

Re: 1985 Johnson 120 hp replacing the VRO pump

Mike,my motor had the non vro boss on the block, and t tapped holes to mount the 88 spl pump, but before I got a chance to look at mine I built a little manifold to mount the new one to, just in case I did not have the factory boss.

I took a small piece of 1/8 inch plate about 2"x3 1/2" and drilled and tapped a 1/8 npt hole into the center of it. I put a hose nipple, coated with red loc-tite, that the pulse hose would fit on in the 1/8 npt hole and cranked it down tight. I then ground the excess off from the inside leaving a hole for the pulses to come through, and a nipple to put the hose on, just like the VRO. I took the gasket from the new pump and layed it over the hole and marked the holes to mount the pump. I drilled and tapped them at 10-32 (I believe) and would put the pump on the manifold, and mounted the whole thing in the spot where the VRO was except my motor had the pump mounting holes and pulse hole in it. My '85 90hp had the holes in it, it's strange your's doesnt.

I have this manifold and would send it to you if you can use it, or post a picture if it will help.

I also have a three hose pump on my 55 Johnny, the pulse hose goes in a boss in the bottom of the housing. The housing is the exact same casting as the block mounted pump except they drilled and tapped the pulse boss and did not drill through the the flush mounted pulse hole. I'll put up a pic.

Here's a spare housing I had in my pickup, the pulse hose goes in the boss with the red X. If I had to do it now I would forget about the manifold and drill and tap the housing. You'll need to run a 1/4 -20 tap in the stock pulse hole and put a set screw in that to plug it if you drill and tap the pulse hose boss. Either way will get the pump working for you.

Thanks guys! I did what you said and tapped the small hole to 1/4"-28 and install a set screw with thread sealer on it. I drilled out and tapped the boss to 1/8" npt and installed a fitting there. Easy fix thanks again!
