Hi at 62years old I am new to this boating fun - I have the above engine that has an approximate five inch piece just above the prop area - would it be possible to change this engine from a long to a short shaft by removing this piece and shortening the shaft ?? this engine goes really well and I have converted her from tiller to cable steering - I overhauled the fuel pump - any help you can offer would be much appreciated

Welcome aboard.

Wrong forum but I will move it Yes you can remove the extension but, you might need a new drive shaft etc

Look at http://shop.evinrude.com/ for a diagram

Re: Johnson 9.9 two stroke J10BALCSF or perhaps J10BA1CSF

perhaps I am getting a bit senile but I have searched the BRP parts list and nowhere can I find my engine listed - as I say it's either a Johnson 9.9 two stroke numbered J10BALCSF or perhaps J10BA1CSF
now according to the 'code' the J = Johnson engine - the 10 is the HP - the BA = AC lighting and rope start - if it is a "1" in the code = 20" (if it's an "L" I don't know) - CS = 1980

and to cap it all I went onto 'Leroys ramblings' and I cannot find an article on shortening the shaft length - would you kind gents please supply a link directly to the articles as I am new to outboard engines and perhaps their terminology is confusing me
THESE ARE THE ARTICLES i HAVE LOOKED ON
3 OB Methods of How to Remove Stubborn Bolts (INTERESTING ARTICLE)
7 OB Outboard Motor Transom height / shaft Length
12 OB Evinrude Model/Year Code Identification 1913 - 1979
14 OB Johnson / Evinrude Year/Model Code Identification 1979 - 2007
15 OB Johnson 10 hp QD Series Motors 1949 - 1963
20 OB Johnson/Evinrude 9.9 / 15 hp General Info & Normal Repairs 1974 - 1992
21 OB Johnson/Evinrude 9.9 / 15 hp Powerhead / Midsection Repairs
27 OB Johnson/Evinrude 9.9 / 15 hp Converting to Electric Start 1974 - 1992

29 OB Johnson/Evinrude 9.9 / 15 hp Converting to Electric Start 1993 - 2005

I need help please

I am not familiar with your model, but the 9.9 that I have I believe requires a shortened driveshaft (which is splined, you can't just cut it down) and a different grommet for the water pump.

You will need a shorter drive shaft & shift rod, and you'll need to cut down your water tube.
