I'm rebuilding my lower unit, due to finding excessive amounts of metal shavings in the gear case. I've replace the gear set, and all bearings. With the case put back together turning the drive shaft by hand, it is very ruff. (with water pump not installed) There is play on the drive shaft up and down of about a 1/16 " while holding the drive shaft up, the shaft spins freely and smooth. Is this normal? Will the rotation of the pinion gear when the engine is running cause the shaft to ride up and be smooth?
