Need help determining year on my Johnson 140 hp V4 outboard

Hello!

I'm new to this awesome forum and I'm looking for some help determining the year of my outboard so that I may purchase the correct year service manual.

The round recess that typically holds the motor identification tag is gone.

I plan to fully restore the motor (and her hull) over this summer/fall/winter starting this weekend. I've posted some pictures of the motor in hopes of this helping. Is there any other way of determining this?

There should be a tag held on by 2 rivets on the transom bracket, left side (when behind the motor looking at the back of it)

Looks like someone went crazy with paint at some point, they may have painted over the tag.

The tag will show the model & serial number.

BRILLIANT! Thanks a bunch etd66ss!! Both numbers clearly legible. Yea your not kidding on the paint job... really bad. Nothing that some careful sand blasting won't make quick work of. The Model Number is J1407XCTE and the Serial Number is J5849837. Do you also know how the translate the numbers?

bhile - Sweet! TYVM guys! You guys made that way too easy. Manual ordered. Hopefully getting replacement parts are still available. Is OMC still around making parts for Evinrude/Johnson?
