Bearing Set screw?

My son changed the gear lube on our 86 Johnson 50 hp. In the process, he removed the
bearing set screw (the phillips head) just above the gear housing. As long as it was out we put a new washer on it and replaced it. I don't have a service manual for the motor and don't even know the function of this screw is. (The gear lube has been changed) Is removing this bearing set screw and putting it back in going to be an issue? Thanks.

If the motor was not run, you're probably fine.

It is used for the shifter to pivot on when changing gears. You will know very quickly if there is a problem once you go to shift gears. If it shifts you are good to go, if it doesn't ... well lets just hope it does.

No sense wrecking your day for nothing.

Not true. This motor does not have a shift cradle (or external pivot screw). Look at the PL on BRP Evinrude site.
