Hi there everybody i have a 1955 evinrude 15hp that is leaking gear oil. its hard to explain but its leaking out of a little hole in the side of the gear case that is there from the factory. its not been drilled into or anything damaged the case its just a hole that looks like its suppose to be be there. so if someone could tell me what the hole is for and why my gear oil is leaking out of it that would be great thanks :D

I think what you are seeing is the drain for the exhaust housing to let the water drain out so that it will not freeze and damage the housing. It is not abnormal for unburnt fuel/oil mixture to drain out of the drain.

I guess you could have a drive shaft seal out. You could drop the lower unit and pressure test it to find out for sure.
