Hi,

I just purchased a used 28 HP SPL and the first time out noticed the water jacket leaking. I was told this is due to overheating and I am concerned why. I checked the thermostat in a pan of water and it does open with temp increase, the water pump is peeing so I am thinking the previous owner ran it out of water and blew the gasket. Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks,
RC

Are you talking about the water jacket on the cylinder head or exhaust cover? If the engine had been over heated before, it is not uncommon the have to replace cover gaskets when if it got really hot.

Check all the bolts and make sure they are tight. Not a hard gasket to replace.

Thanks. It also was missing one bolt.
The engine also does not run off-idle so I am concerned about a carb issue. The one time I could it it off idle it felt like the prop was slipping. I am trying to get my money back and start over with another engine.
Thanks for your response.
