You might possibly have a bad shock absorber in the lower unit, if it pulls over hard.

Was it hard to pull before you started work on it? Have you recently replaced the impeller? Remove the powerhead and see if its still hard to pull.

It pulls fine with Power head removed? I have had on/off numerous times as i changed to a LU off CD 15 5.5 hp Johnson.
It has a new impellor but it previously pulled fine? Thanks

Did you use a Sierra impeller? They are too thick and must be sanded down otherwise it will be hard to pull.

You may have a broken spring in the shock absorber, and it's now binding. Search this forum for fix. I hear people put 'em together and compress, then tig the shell part together so it won't bind, then using a weaker drive pin in case of hitting a rock..

Search and you'll see what I'm talking about.
Good luck!

I'm talking about the shock absorber underneath the impeller plate.

When I put pwr head back on it will not pull unless I leave screws loose? It appears that power head
will not seat down properly?

If you have the cup/spring and the plastic thing w/oring inside mounted correctly at the top of the drive shaft, you're likely pushing the drive shaft down and the lower shock absorber is binding because it's too 'long' with a broken spring inside. Again, search 'shock absorber' for your year/hp, and you'll get that info. Broken shock absorber would do just as you describe.
