I went through the Top Secret Files and couldn't find an answer on this one. Noticed that the change from bushing to needle bearing occurred in '65 but does that apply to the 9.5 HP motor?
So which mix is right for this engine, 24:1 or 50:1?
Thanks, Wally

24:1 for a 1965

WRONG!!

The change took place in 1964, the first year of the MQ (9.5HP)models.

1964 and later are all 50:1, though some folks use 24:1 in the JW and JH models (3HP) right up to 1970.

So who do I believe? Have I done any damage running for a short period with a 24 to 1 mix?

No better to run heavy than light! I think if I were you, I would call a few local marinas and ask them. Boat repair around your area should have that info too! Good luck. NOTE: I have been wrong before, but that's how we learn!

No worries Monte. You are right, much better to be heavy than light. I didn't run it that long so it will just burn off next time I run it.

From Evinrude.com
2 - What is the fuel/oil mix for my motor?
The following is generally true: 1958 and prior used 20:1, 1959 thru 1963 used 24:1, 1964 and newer use 50:1. High performance usage (racing) requires a ratio of 25:1. New engine break-in (not DI) requires 25:1.
http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/Owners-Center/FAQ/OilAndFuel

24:1 will not hurt your motor, but it was designed to run at 50:1.
