This plastic latch works by mating (2) grooved surfaces together, much like (2) wash boards pressed together. It is suppose to hold in shear, and is released when one is separated from the other.
Problem is one surface is worn flat, and the hood will just not stay attached, much less hold while trying to tilt the engine up by hand.

Question is there a fix with an improved design?

Thanks in advance.

I had a '96 9.9 Sailmaster and it had a "spring" type latch. I wasn't impressed with the design, but it might be something different for you to try. Not sure why they just didn't got with a lever like on their larger motors.
