The 1960 75hp model is a magneto ignition system and the wiring is fairly simple.

What are the terminals marked on the back of the ignition switch?
What color wires do you have leading from the wiring harness that would connect to the switch?

ignition switch b a s c m m and the wire leading to the ign switch red , green ,yellow two black grounds keep in mind i am tring to save as much of this wiring as possible so i still have to remove a few cracked wires so should be replacing them today my father in law and a friend they are both master electrictions so they are helping and have weeded few out so they asked me to get a diagram because their is constant power going to the coil something in the electrical control box is not right thanks

Yep, in a word, Bad. 6-8 gallons per hour, at speed. I had one. A great motor, but I couldn't carry enough gas to go where I wanted to go.

does anyone know if i can get something that can control how much gas i use and if there is a good way to save gas other than not running it

Re: timing a 1960 75hp johnson

If the sync is set up correctly....

Mileage = ? (Depends on tide current and wind)

Gas consumption = Usually as follows:

Six Gallons at full throttle = 45 minutes.

Six gallons at Cruising Range = 1hr and 45 minutes

Cruising range is reached by..... Hit full throttle, then back off to approximately 3/4 throttle. Spark advance stays at full advance at this setting but the throttle butterflies close to about 1/2 the setting or less.

Remove the hood, engine not running but in gear, adjust/move throttle as above to observe what I'm speaking of.

Re: timing a 1960 75hp johnson

so how bout if i was trying troll with this motor at a low speed i know i ask a lot but if this is that bad i will get it to good working order and sell this beast lol anyway so low idle in a windless conditions so you say adjust the throttle to in gear off and this will save more gas so if i do this in trolling speed will i do better

Kinda like this. More throttle means more fuel consumption. Less throttle means less fuel consumption. But I don't recommend using anything above 25hp for trolling for various reasons.

Re: timing a 1960 75hp johnson

The 75 will troll ok, but you will be surprised at how much gas it uses while doing so. The reason is the intake/crankcase design, very inefficient. A lot of fuel "rains" out of the air charge and is dumped overboard. There is nothing you can do about it, except buy a newer motor.

Re: timing a 1960 75hp johnson

These are for my '59 50HPV4 motor. Yours should be similar.

Line up flywheel timing mark with mark on pull starter and block. Advance throttle until mark on pulley base aligns with punch mark on dist bracket. Set dist pulley so timing mark aligns with mark on pulley base. Set points to .020. Set carb arm to just touch roller on throttle plate shaft. Turn flywheel CW until pulley aligns with mark 90* away, near block. Adjust second set of points to .020. Install pulley cover.
