I've got a late 70's model AMF Muskie with an 85 Johnson. The steering froze up at the engine. I beat the cable end out as far as I could and noticed bearings and all where frozen and broke. The boat isn't in the greatest shape, but the motor runs fine.
I'm a newbie on boat repair. Would it be easier to replace the transom bracket to solve the problem or try and replace the bearings and cable? Is there a way to bypass the old steering? I'd like to do this myself cheaply, else the boat will remain lawn furniture.
