What oil should be used in the lower unit on a 1950-1951 Johnson 5 hp sea horse model TN 26?

It should say right on it "Fill with Hypoid oil". If not, that is what it takes anyway. Hypoid oil was the 90 weight oil used in the "modern" rear axles of cars back in those days. OR, more up to date, use 80-90 weight outboard gear oil.

if your lower unit leaks and water intrusion is present, you can either replace the seals and make it new again, or charge the lower unit with the Lubri-Plate 105 Outboard Gearcase Lube. This stuff is pretty much the same stuff as the white, engine rebuilder's grease that is used on bearings and such so the moving parts have lubrication at initial start up, before the oil pump charges up the oiling system. Anyhow, most motors in the time frame of yours here have less than perfect seals, so water intrusion is very likely. If not, consider yourself lucky :D
