I have a 1966 Johnson Seahorse Electric 60 that needs a new shift cable. The end where it attaches to the shift lever broke and it appears to be part of the shift cable. Does anyone know where I might locate a replacement. It looks allot like this one on Ebay that I'm tempted to buy and see if it may work, but I would rather find something new if possible:

Welcome to the forum! The members here are great and should have some suggestions for you. My 2cents is that Johnson and Evinrude controls, cables and connectors are identical for identical model motors; only the paint and decals are different. The eBay link is for two-lever control unit which fits models with mechanical-shift gearcases. If that is what you need, then it should work. However, it may also be worn-out or broken from 45 years of use. FYI, both ends of cables are replaceable. They have set-screws that clamp the connectors onto the cable. Hopefully, another member will post that part number because I suspect it is still available through BRP and maybe aftermarket sources also. Good luck!

Never mind what year the motor is, what year is the control? The cable design was changed in 1979, and they also fit previous motor years (but not previous year controls). The ends do come off the pre-'79 cables but not the '79-up cables. Pre-'79 cables are type 400, and '79-up are type 479. Both are available right here at iboats http://www.iboats.com/Johnson-Contr...7974880--**********.477863335--view_id.243425

At work right now, but I really have no idea what year the shift box is. I It is a Johnson Shift Master. I do know that the end that attaches to the shift lever on the motor attaches to a round bolt looking attachment coming off the shift lever. It is a two cable shifter. By saying that the pre'79 ends come off, does that mean just the end can be purchased somewhere?

Thanks,

Robert

Yes, but I cannot find the OMC part number anywhere. F_R is one of the grand-master gurus on this forum and, if he does not have the p/n, then it may not be available.

EDIT: I believe this is what you are talking about. It should be available at current BRP/Evinrude dealers, former OMC/Johnson dealers who may still have stock and online possibly at iboats store although I could not get a hit on this particular p/n, 0308034.

Thanks for all your help, I ended up calling Teleflex Marine since they seemed to be the manufacturer. Another site I found useful was http://www.boats.net/ because they diagrams with part numbers. Guess it's tim eto go locate an old Johnson Manual :)

As long as you get it fixed is what counts. FYI, p/n#0308035-INSERT, Casing guide; p/n#0308036-CLAMP, Cable casing guide and p/n#0308037-SCREW, Clamp should be everything you need to connect your cable to the control lever. Not sure from your description what is actually broken and needs replacing. Good luck!

The part that attaches the cable to the shift lever is broken.

Thanks,

Robert
