I have a 79 100hp Evinrude on my 79 Cajun that does not have a tach on it. I would like to put one on it but don't know what wires I have to run to add it. I have a manual for it but it doesn't show. Any one have an idea how to do it. Would appreciate any help. Thanks. RUSTY :confused:

See below. Does your control unit have a three pin plug? If so, just get a mating harness from any BRP Evinrude dealer.
Grey - tach pulse line
Black - grd
Purple - switched 12vdc

Wilde1j is correct of course. I would add the following.

You need a tachometer that will operate off of a 6 pulse charging system, available on this site no doubt and your dealership. The tachometer will have a dial on the back of it which should be set on number six (6 pulses).

These tachometers usually have four wires running from them in the colors of: Black, Blue, Gray, Red.

Black connects to ground. (Self Explanatory)
Blue connects to the light switch. (Illuminates tachometer when needed)
Gray connects to the Gray lead that normally protrudes from the wiring harness. (Signal Sensor)
Red connects to the "A" (Auxiliary) terminal of the ignition switch. (12v when key is ON)
