Need help to disconnect shift rod on lower-unit of 84, 35hp evinrude

Want to put new impeller in the water-pump, but don"t know how to undo the shift rod can anyone help me with this? It's an electric-start with tiller steering. 1984 model 35hp evinrude . I have the bolts all out of the lower-unit and have an inch gap but that is as far as I can get, don"t have a manuel. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Look here number 66 and 71 a connecter and keeper.remove the keeper and connecter the lower will drop off.put one of the 4 bolts in partially so the lower doesnt drop and crack hitting the floor.

hey dew I bet he appreciates that! I know I spent quite awhile trying to figure out the same problem ( poor lighting) and wtrbuster....don't loose the keeper!
