Hi all, I was changing the water pump on 1971 18hp evenrude and was wondering if it is OK for the drive shaft to come out of the gear housing as it seems to be able to be easily pulled out?
Yes, it's okay. Just make sure you don't shake the lower unit and hope that the pinion gear and such doesn't move much. You should be able to slide it back in with no problem.
