Removing bad steering cable from a 95 Seaswirl Striper 20' center console w/96 Johnson 130 outboard. I cannot get the cable far enough out of the tilt tube for the end to clear it. I can't imagine they designed it so you have to remove the outboard just to replace the cable.

What is the best way to remove the steering cable on this setup?

Yep, thats what they did.
Rent a cherry picker engine hoist.

Engineers/designers, have their brain in completely different places than a mechanic, where his is in his/her head.

Or those of us who know in advance and buy engine hoists from craigslist for cheap.
Hoists are might handy to have around.

You can just take a saw-all and cut it off. Pull out the cable, then insert new cable in engine tilt tube first. If its a really tight turn, a few friends and a lift will do the trick. Its really not that hard to remove the engine.

OK. Sorry for not getting back sooner. I was able to get the cable out WITHOUT cutting it. I ended up simply loosening the 4 mount nuts just enough to be able to get the rod into the inside of the opening where the cable comes to the outside. And yes - I had a helper.

Thanks for all the replies.
