I'm trying to remove the shift linkage on my 88 hp evinrude to replace the water pump. I have found several pics that show a bolt holding the linkage to the shift arm but I can't find it on the motor. It looks as though it's just a pin but we can't punch it out. What holds the arm to the linkage and how do I remove it?

No biggie. Look down on stbd side below the cable connecting track and in toward the carb and you will see a pull pin through the shift horizontal shaft. Pull the pin out and push the shaft in toward the carb. There is a block , as part of the shaft, which has a pin in it facing back toward the stbd side. Once that is disengaged you can pull the lower out.
Its a bugger to get back but with a little patience. Wish they had got smart and used the turnbuckle like most everyone does now.
