Idiot newbie question, a friend gave me his old Ranger to use and the starter was making a whirring noise (bendix not engaging) and then it just clicks when the key is turned. I am guessing the shaft may need to be lubricated. I have removed the sensor cover but stopped there as i was leary about screwing something up. The Seleoc manual has everything taken down to the flywheel when illustrating repairs or maintenece.

The question is can i just unbolt the flywheel cover and get access to the starter or do I have to disassemble a bunch of other items.

You should be able to remove the cover. Can you not get a spray straw in there from a can of tri flow? Don't use wd-40.
Might be as easy to just pull the starter?

Picture would help.

Could be just a bad or low battery.

I will get some pics tonight after work. The starter is not accessable unless that cover is removed. the pics will definately help explain. OK pics should be attached now.

I have replaced the battery. I have read through most of the threads related to starter issues. i thought I would start with all of the obvious things first.

Make sure ALL of your battery connections are good, clean and tight on both the battery and the MOTOR.

I know that I rambled a bit on the original post, but back to my original question about removing the flywheel cover. My big concern is disconnecting what looks to be the throttle linkage on the side opposite the starter (see Pics above) It looks like i should be able to unbolt the flywheel cover and lift it up and out of the way.

There's a very good step by step procedure in the OEM factory service manual on how to do this. Did you ever check your battery cables?

Yes, i did check my cables, someone suggested jumper cables from the battery to the starter to verify the cable pathway was good. i thought I might try that tonight.

The boat came with the Seloc manual which is too generic for my needs.

Seloc and Clymer manuals replaced the Sears catalogs in the old outdoor crappers.

Several responses, not one single answer to the question. Why even reply? I have the same problem now that Bama1063 had and there is not one shred of info on the net about it, lol....go figure.
